THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - Fri, 29 Oct 1999
By Benjamin F. Elliott
The Horns Of Nimon have gotten longer, the Dinosaurs are back, good news in Utah, potential trouble in Maine, and the Australian countdown. And it's not even sweeps month yet.
KTEH San Jose, CA has found the solution to the many incomplete episodic versions of the Tom Baker stories that US stations are stuck with - they made their own! Coming Sunday, KTEH will air a complete episodic broadcast of The Horns of Nimon, compiled from both the episodic and movie versions. The work was done by Ken Patterson:

"Well, we had both the edited episodic and the feature version in our library. Using a DVC-Pro digital deck for editing (and to preserve the quality) I took the openings and endings from the episodic version with some overlap in the scenes (for convenient editing) and filled with the footage from the feature version, which is complete (save for some alternate takes at the cliffhangers, which are preserved in the episodic versions)."

Ken did not expect to be able to restore any more Tom Baker installments during KTEH's current run through the stories, but there is always hope for the future. Also, this work was done at KTEH, not BBC Worldwide Americas, so if you convince a PBS station to order the episodic Horns, you're still going to get the edited for syndication version.
BBC Choice has made a last minute schedule change that Doctor Who fans will like. Much of this week's primetime lineup has been tossed to enable them to rerun Invasion of the Dinosaurs. Because of the time slots it is being given, all 4 versions of BBC Choice will air it, instead of just the England version. If you missed those dinosaurs last time, don't miss them again.
KUED 7 in Salt Late City, Utah is looking for volunteers, particularly from the Outer Gallifrey 2 group, to help man the pledge lines for a December Doctor Who pledge drive. It seems they have decided to bring the Doctor back to Utah TV. I don't know the return date for the show yet, only that it is not this weekend. Among the items that will be pledged on to support the show will be a convention poster signed by Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and some of the companions.
MPBC Maine is pulling Doctor Who from their schedule after Saturday's episode - Horror of Fang Rock episode 1. An e-mail asking about the future of the show on their station produced this response: "Unfortunately, the Doctor is on hiatus during these "Red Dwarf" specials. Since we have not completed our December programming schedule, I encourage you to check your December program guide for more details. Your letter and others like it are the best way to show us that there is support for the programming you enjoy."

The rest of the response asked for people to come out and vote on Question 5 on November 2nd . Question 5 asks if MPBC can receive a $9.4 million bond issue earmarked for building their digital stations by 2002, the original federally-mandated time to have digital stations on the air. (I was under the impression that the PBS stations had an extension through 2003.)
UKTV in Australia's Top 10 Doctor Who stories - the stories so far:
10 - The Robots of Death
9 - City of Death
8 - Planet of the Spiders
7 - Earthshock
6 - The Talons of Weng-Chiang
5 - Remembrance of the Daleks
UKTV tentatively plans to finish the top 10 stories on Thursday, November 25, which, according to Jason Fraser of the www.varos.com site, implies that there will be 3 more 4 episode stories and 1 more 6 episode stories. After the weekend replays on November 27 and 28 Doctor Who leaves UKTV for 2 months due to Sapphire and Steel. After that, UKTV will air all the surviving stories in order (they promise).
The UK, Europe, and most of the North American continent are going from Daylight to Standard Time on Sunday. Friday and Saturday listings will be in Daylight Time. Sunday listings on will be in Standard Time. Australia will be going the other direction, changing to Dalight Time. Some acronyms will change, some won't. If you are not changing your time zone, bear that in mind while checking these listings.
Corrections and additions are welcome. And now, the listings:

Late Saturday night, David Howe is one of the guests on a BBC Choice show about collecting. Dave Howe has perhaps the largest collection of Doctor Who merchandise on Earth, and will discuss it among other matters. Also, BBC Choice has yanked already planned programming to give viewers another chance to see Invasion of the Dinosaurs. Episode 1 is in Black & White, episode 3 is extended. Because of the time slots it is airing in, all the BBC Choice regions get to see the programme. Only the England variation of BBC Choice has the on-air BBC Choice DOG interfering with the picture, so if you can watch another version, you can see 'Invasion' with nothing blocking the screen at all.
